Bamboo, like wood, is a natural composite material with a high strength-to-weight ratio and is useful as a structural material for various constructions. Its strength-to-weight ratio is similar to that of timber, and its strength is generally comparable to strong softwood or hardwood. However, it is more susceptible to decay than wood due to the lack of natural toxins and its typically thin walls. Untreated bamboo can last 2–6 years indoors and less than a year if exposed to water. To protect bamboo from decay, two key design principles are required: it must be kept dry throughout its lifespan and treated to protect it from insects such as beetles and termites.
